In case there are those who have been confused by diagnoses made by Psychiatrists or Physicians in the past ( like me, and I am a nurse familiar with terminology), this is a good book to help weed out the generalizations of medical diagnosis that are placed on patients also diagnosed with mental disorders. There is so much labeling going on, with the DSMlV book that is used constantly changing. Meetings I have gone to have taken and changed the treatments and added about 18 new categories to diagnosis such as Bipolar Disorder. Dr. Islam does a good job of explaining the mind-body connection without judging those that should choose to get treatment with current medicine. The main disorder that he helps contain is panic disorder, which can be scary and makes some people feel like they are breathless and having a heart attack. His specialties include treatment of anxiety disorder- which is sometimes made fun of in the medical community. Many physicians don't like to treat mental disorders or traits, because there is sometime not a definitive lab or test that will show up to explain the etiology of the anxiety. He also does a very good job of describing ways to fast ( mostly in his first book) , which I have found helpful to help in the cleansing of the mind and body. He also attempts to bring up the connection of religion and how it can help some get through very difficult times. his first publication, Panic Attacks and Phobias helped me through a very difficult time. They are now realizing that more research needs to be done, with the National Institute of Health Library in Washington now aiding Physicians and Clinicians to help with this disorder. Medications are also being changed frequently for many disorders such as Bipolar Disorder, with those treating this complication also realizing the symptoms of the patient need to be treated as well, such as problems with sleeping and the anxiety and depression also needing treatment. Dr. Islam helps clarify the confusion of some antidepressants in this book, with people finding out that they do not help the symptoms, and in fact sometimes make it worse. Recently, it has come out that Bipolar disorder may be subdivided into at least 18 different categories, which can make the treatment
of it complicated. Dr Islam stresses the need to follow up with your physician as well as learn about these disorders. Some personality traits can be misdiagnosed as a disorder. I was first diagnosed with problems with anxiety in conjunction with a heart condition called Mitral Valve Prolapse, which is very common among women. Most women are first diagnosed by their OB/GYN doctors because that is all they are used to seeing. His books are very easy to read, even by the average person with no knowledge of medical terminology. Panic attacks related to anxiety can be very scary. He helps make some sense of why they happen, and what should be done by the patient and staff to help control the symptoms, which may mimic a heart attack. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in an explanation instead of being put down or made fun of because of a very common disorder. This disorder can be very crippling to those who cannot find someone who is willing to treat them. It is common around actors and actresses as well as those in public speaking situations. Bipolar disorder is now thought to be very common throughout the police department and actors and actresses. Finding someone who is willing to treat this symptoms becomes necessary. There are a lot of older treatments which Dr. Islam goes into detail about that can cause problems related to the older medications. I hope you find this book helpful, with his first book also interesting for those wishing to explore the mind body connection.

Doctor What Wrong With Me? Dr Shahidul Islam 9789843111005 Books Reviews

Dr Islam and his book changed my life. I have never met a doctor that understood chemicals and sickness as he did. I have been treated by 30 or more doctors for anxiety and depression and after meeting Dr Islam and reading his books, I know why I never got better. He treated my true chemical problem and didnt just toss me on a med for chemical depression. This book is a life saver.
Recent advances in Brain imaging have led to explosion of our knowledge about the workings of our brain and its maladies. In this book, Dr. Islam takes full advantage of our current knowledge of brain functions and distills in to a simple easilily understood book for lay and general public to deal with their brain related problems and how to take charge of their mental health and welbeing. The book is coincise, about 165 pages, and is reasonably priced for general consumption.

I had been searching for years for a reason, a direction, a clinical diagnosis for my health issues. Years of searching through Western conventional medical physicians and facilities, just led me to more medicines and doctors. Literally within months of reading this book and yet curious about how could it be this simple, I followed it's directions and then realized I was feeling much better. This book isn't just another idea that has come along. The book addresses malfunctions of the brain and why this happens. In the past I was labeled and treated with several diagnosis's and prescription's differently with each physician that treated me. I realized that this is what Western medicine was taught to follow and they were not comfortable with looking outside the box. Finally, I found Dr. Islam and he knew immediately what was going on with me. I had body related problems associated with anxiety. Amazingly, I started feeling better and 3 years now, continue to do so!

Dr. Shahidul Islam is an American physician, who isn't interested in profiting from the public but serving the Hippocratic Oath to heal. He not only has served in our American Military ( with a high rank, I may add) but has years of knowledge and schooling and a graduate of Vanderbilt University. Originally, from Bangladesh, he also brings the wisdom of the Eastern philosophies as well. I am proud to say I am prescription free. What a true blessing to have found something and someone who simplifies mental health issues and makes it understandable and real and especially not shameful. I am not a family member, nor a close friend, but just a patient who has had a long journey. A journey that he and his book has helped end in a beautiful manner.
Got this and didnt think it was very good. It didnt tell me anything I hadn't already heard many times. Wasn't help for me.
